Biography

Israeli Mezzo Soprano Shay Bloch has performed numerous roles with the Israeli Opera, including: Suzuki in Madama Butterfly (Puccini), Fenena in Nabucco (Verdi), Mercedes in Carmen (Bizet), Marthe in Faust (Gounod), Ein Page der Herodias in Salome (Strauss), Hannah in The Passenger (Weinberg), Emilia in Otello (Verdi), Annina in La Traviata (Verdi), Suzy in La Rondine (Puccini), Gertrude in Roméo et Juliette (Gounod), the Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte (Mozart), Giovanna in Rigoletto (Verdi), and Eboli (cover) in Don Carlo (Verdi). In the upcoming seasons she will perform the roles of Rosette in Manon (Massenet), Jade Boucher in Dead Man Walking (Heggie) and a cover for the role of Sister Helen Prejean, Olga in Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky) and Flora in La Traviata (Verdi).

In her international career Ms. Bloch has debuted in Teatro Comunale Luciano Pavarotti Modena as Zita in Gianni Schicchi (Puccini), in the Sofia National Opera as Fenena in Nabucco (Verdi), with the Associazione Sinfonico Lirica Lombarda in Arona and Bergamo (Italy) as Amneris in Aida (Verdi), In the Festival Pucciniano di Torre del Lago as a cover for Suzuki in Madama Butterfly and as La Maestra delle novizie in Sour Angelica (Puccini) in a performance in Bagni di Lucca. She performed the role of Marthe in Faust (Gounod) and Contessa di Coigny in Andrea Chénier (Giordano) in a collaborated production of Teatro Comunale Luciano Pavarotti Modena, Fondazione Teatri di Piacenza and I Teatri di Reggio Emilia. Ms. Bloch has recently debuted in Teatro Regio di Parma and in Teatro Comunale Alighieri di Ravenna in the role of Contessa di Coigny in Andrea Chénier (Giordano) and covered the role of Madelon.

Ms. Bloch was recently engaged as a soloist in Mozart’s Requiem and Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle at the Abu Gosh Festival and performed the role of Madame Flora (Baba) in The Medium (Menotti), with the Jerusalem Street Orchestra. She has given numerous concerts throughout Israel in varied repertoire, with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon LeZion, the New Haifa Symphony Orchestra and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Bloch has performed as a soloist with leading conductors such as Daniel Oren, Dan Ettinger, Daniele Callegari, Frederic Chaslin, Omer Meir Wellber, Nir Kabaretti and others.

Ms. Bloch is a former ensemble member of the Israeli Opera's Meitar Opera Studio where her repertoire included in both orchestral and piano accompanied performances: Charlotte in Werther (Massenet), The Princess in Sour Angelica (Puccini), Madame Flora (Baba) in The Medium (Menotti), the Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas (Purcell), the Witch in Hänsel und Gretel (Humperdinck), the Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte (Mozart), Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart), Tisbe in La Cenerentola (Rossini), Giannetta in L'elisir d'amore (Donizetti) and the fortunate opportunity to travel to South Korea for a series of concerts. In the IVAI Summer Program in Tel Aviv she performed the roles of Mère Jeanne in the Dialogues des Carmélites (Poulenc) and Mrs. Ott in Susannah (Floyd), and participated in Masterclasses with Joan Dornemann.

In 2016 Ms. Bloch received the honorable scholarship to work with Mirella Freni as a participant in Corso di Alta Formazione Cantata Lirici at the Teatro Comunale Luciano Pavarotti Modena, and continues to study with her. In 2015 Ms. Bloch was a finalist in the “il Concorso Internazionale di Canto Lirico G.B.Rubini” Competition.

Ms. Bloch is a graduate of the Buchman-Mehta School of Music and a recipient of the AICF, the Fay Harbour, the Baser, the Eli Leon and the International Vocal Arts Institute scholarships.
